The 10 best Horror / Survival-Horror games of the eighth generation of video games

#Articles | Fear also has to be prestigious!
Renatitoem

Everything that moves human sensations fascinates us, and that includes terror. The feeling of apprehension and agony are always present in these games, perhaps that is why terror is one of the most loved genres among players. Some play them by leaps and bounds, others simply cannot play. Whether playing or watching, horror games are one of the ones that catch the attention of players.

Horror games were on the rise in this generation. Many works of the genre were delivered to the players, either by major developers, or by indies developers. The rise of streaming channels has also boosted horror games and survival-horror, since they are very successful there, so it is not surprising that success. Although in this generation we have the absence of greats of terror, such as Dead Space, Silent Hill, F.E.A.R., Alan Wake, Siren and other iconic series, the current one has been served with excellent titles, and we will see in this article.

[alert] IMPORTANT POINTS [/ alert]

Before going to the list, read the following points:

  1. Outlast 2 is not present as he entered the list of best indies. Our aim is to quote as many games as possible on different lists. If it weren't for that, he would definitely be here.
  2. We only mention 1 game per franchise.
  3. Disagree with respect. It's impossible to please everyone.
  4. The list is arranged in alphabetical order.

[notice] THE BEST 10 [/ notice]

Renatito | Alien: Isolation

Early in this generation we were treated to the best Alien game in years. Beautiful graphics and an unsettling silence set the tone for this magnificent game. Amanda Ripley is hunted by Alien practically the whole game, this makes the player uncomfortable during the experience. Alien's artificial intelligence is also very impressive: it adapts to your actions making you have to change your strategy constantly. You will discover that the Alien is not the only problem, also wait for other enemies and unusual puzzles. You will be able to defend yourself, this is not just a game of hide and seek, but notice in advance that the Alien is very thick-skinned and you will only be able to fend him off, but the weapons are very useful against other enemies. Maps and radars will be your best friends to guide you through Sevastopol, but be careful: Alien can appear where you least expect it.

Billy | Days Gone

This world will not give you a truce! The phrase used as a slogan for Days Gone reflects this experience well. When announced in 2016, I thought it would be just another Shooter with Zombies taking elements of survival from games like The Last of Us and Dying Light, and applying their fashion, but I was wrong. Bend Studio wanted to deviate from the fashion that The Walking Dead-inspired games have in this type of game, and created Freakers, types of Zombies with their various variations, which are not just mummies / slugs without brains, but who act and have their own strategy, and when they are together ... they make a tremendous horde. As it is an Open-World game, over 20/30 Hours of play, things can become a little repetitive, but the highlight here goes to the dynamic system that is being projected, adding new equipment, new vegetation and climates, new characters, and even in the narrative. Yes, one of Days Gone's strongest points is its plot, which, although it seems a little cliché, shows a lot of transparency from Deacon St. John, who lost his beloved wife at the beginning of this apocalypse, and seeks to find refuge. The game's plot has many elements that we have already seen in Series like Sons of Anarchy and Far Cry 3, with biker gangs, who use and abuse illegal substances and one of the most important elements for this is without a doubt their means of transportation, the Moto. You will definitely get attached and use it a lot, whether to move between maps, save friends, collect resources, use it in key moments that the plot brings, or even as a complement to Gameplay. I also want to highlight the fact that the game has an excellent Stealth combat system, which offers a wide range of ways to approach and deal with your enemies, whether Humans or Freakers. As much as its launch was controversial due to problems with Frame-Rate, excessive Crashs, Bugs and problems with textures, Days Gone, with the passing of some updates, has established itself as a solid, well-built raw product, with its key points and base that makes it unique, it doesn’t entirely risk trying to deviate from the formula, but it doesn’t repeat itself or follow the same formula as a standard Survival-Horror, and it’s what makes it more special and makes me find it a grand title.

Renatito | Dying Light

I confess that I didn't expect much from this game, but as soon as I played it I ended up being admired for its technical quality and depth. Dying Light is an excellent open world of zombie apocalypse that mixes terror well with survival horror (it has been a difficult task for me to find bad games published by Warner Bros.). Yes, we will have to do crafting, yes, we will have to kill zombies with firearms and bladed weapons. Speaking of weapons, they have a durability time, which will always leave you behind because they can break at any time, so it is important to have spare weapons. They can be repaired or upgraded with the items we find in that bleak world, which is very reminiscent of The Walking Dead series. After a viral outbreak, the surviving humans split into ghettos inside fortified camps, and it is in this scenario that Kyle Crane (the protagonist) will do tasks for these groups while secretly working for Global Relief Effort, which has vested interests. Surviving is a difficult task in this game, especially if you play hard. Zombies are aggressive and get even more aggressive at night with volatiles on the street. The map is even large in size for a game of this genre and the game has a good duration, with a lot of main and side missions. It is an immense pleasure to blow a zombie's head, but know that at various times you will be trapped and your intelligence and agility will be crucial at that moment.

Renatito | P.T.

Missing what we haven't experienced yet ... P.T. (Playable Teaser) caught everyone's attention in 2014 by presenting us with a dark and enigmatic house. Many did not know what to do, but those who managed to solve the mystery discovered that it was a teaser for the next game in the Silent Hill series, Silent Hills. Hideo Kojima was very clever when launching a teaser through a playable demo, and that left many mouths open and excited for the next Silent Hill that would approach a different first person perspective. But then Konami came and ... canceled the game. This wound still hurts the chest of many and to this day we haven't seen anything that could be a continuation of Silent Hill, the last game was in 2012. And we may never see a game in the series again, since Konami has been moving away lately and more from game production, having focused on the pachinkos market. Rumors of a new Silent Hill being produced have been around for some time, but so far we don't know if they are real. You will surely ask: why P.T. on this list if it's not even a complete game? I put it on this list because it was a demo that drew a lot of attention and that influenced several subsequent horror games. The first person view, the bizarre sounds and the supernatural happenings of P.T are present in many horror games of this generation, including Layers of Fear pays homage to the tall woman of P.T. "putting it" in your game. It really is a pity that Silent Hills did not see the light of day, but at least P.T. left his legacy.

Renatito | Resident Evil 7

It is, without a doubt, the "most terrifying" Resident Evil of recent years. The most recent Resident Evil titles have taken a more action path, with the player being able to count on the help of a friend in cooperative mode and always being well armed and armed. Resident Evil 7 brings back survival horror by placing few ammunition available to the player and always making him uneasy. The poorly lit Bakers' mansion helps to make you panic: it's hard to know what's in front of you, your back and your side. The puzzles and the take-and-take of items are back, so don't just try to survive in the macabre mansion, you will also have to puzzle over the puzzles, with the maps and the observation of the items becoming essential for the player to follow in front. The moldy ones made you uncomfortable, but for sure the biggest problem will be dealing with the Bakers. They undergo bizarre mutations and are very intelligent, making it difficult to kill and hide from them. You know practically nothing about Ethan and the Bakers, and everything is gradually discovered through the documents and the lines of the characters. The game has an interesting plot twist and touches the supernatural a little: here are not just biological threats. Resident Evil 7 is mandatory for fans of the series and the genre. Go Tell Aunt Rhody!

Renatito | State of Decay 2

State of Decay 2 was criticized at its launch for lack of polimentthe and the plot little worked, but I can guarantee that it is an excellent survival of zombie apocalypse. SoD 2's focus is on community management, where you have to keep your community strong with equipment, weapons and food. To keep it in good condition you will have to collect items on the map, but for that you need to be well armed, count on help and luck. In it you must eliminate hordes of zombies that threaten your neighborhood, help npc's as well as recruit them to compose your camp. It is a complicated task to survive in the world of State of Decay: zombies are hostile and tend to walk in packs, with faster and more resistant zombies. Here if you die, it was already for your character, you will have to assume the skin of another member of your camp. Your deceased character's items stay with him, but you can retrieve them by returning to the place of his death. It is very satisfying to kill zombies in State of Decay 2, either with firearms or vehicles. The noise and the look of their exploding heads is a very pleasant thing to see / hear. State of Decay 2 received several updates and is now even more complete after the release of the Juggernaut Edition. State of Decay 3 has been announced for the Xbox Series X, so expect an even bigger game of scale and scope, with better graphics and, who knows, with a more elaborate storyline.

Billy | The Evil Within 2

Direct sequel to their 2014 predecessor, with Evil Within 2, the Japanese of Tango Gameworks, led by Shinji Mikami, decided to take a little more risk. Yes, the game still follows the structure of TPS Survival with moments of pause and exploration while focusing on the action, but here, they enhance the entire formula with a Semi-Open World, giving entry to Secondary Missions, and something else investigative while you pause between the main missions. Despite something a little common, it is worth mentioning the complete localization with Subtitles and Dubbing in PT-BR in the game, something that Evil Within 1 did not have, being a game completely in English, although it is not a problem for me that I am fluent in the tongue. Its plot follows exactly from the end point of the original game, mainly from its DLC's, which are very important here, for you to find out where the daughter of the protagonist of the game, Sebastian Castellanos, is, who will have to return to STAM, once she it's alive. It is not right to be carried away by the fact that the game was not as popular as the original, having low sales, because yes, Evil Within 2 is an evolution and general improvement of the formula, both in its Gameplay, Narrative, World, Graphics and Exploration , and without a doubt it is possible to note that the game served as an inspiration for Capcom, in Resident Evil 2 Remake, which follows much of what is the concepts of Evil Within 2, which by the way, was inspired by the Original Resident Evil 4.

Billy | The Last of Us: Part II

"And I can't Walk, on Path of the Right, Because I .... Wrong ...". It is difficult for me to speak openly about my general experience with this game developed by Naughty Dog, because, as I said, I am not a fan of the original game, but something that captured me and made me choose to put it here is undoubtedly because of its boldness. Yes, boldness and courage. For both in terms of World, Progression, Narrative and Immersion, he is perfect, in his own way! Yes, many can criticize the basic formula that the game's plot follows, where it doesn't try to create Villains or Heroes, but pass on the fact that in that world, it doesn't exist, everyone is human, everyone makes mistakes, everyone has feelings, and everyone he has his sense of justice or revenge, in his own way. In these terms of aesthetics, Neil Druckmann and his Naughty Dog team knew how to capture well and bring a cinematic environment that holds you and pulls you from side to side in an amazing and scary roller coaster, which is well executed, with its strings and defects, but that follows something original, making something very original. It is also worth mentioning that without a doubt what most impresses me and makes me praise is the fact that the game has a great variety of Enemies, NPCs, Attack Animations, Execution, Equipment, Weapons, Melee Combat, Stealth, and of course, no I can forget to mention your ambitious and incredible AI. I have never felt that the Artificial Intelligence of a game has evolved as much as the experience I had playing The Last of Us 2, where everything, absolutely everything, is possible. Enemies can make rounds and keep watch on different routes and trajectories, observe Ellie's footprints and follow her, hear noises and look for where they came from and where they went, devise entry or escape strategies, as a team, and etc., etc. This brings immersion and a sense of insecurity and fear in a very satisfactory and well-created way, mainly due to theto always be present and evolving, even on side missions, or when you're running away with a Horse or trying to hit your arrows on those bloodthirsty Wolves. What I can say about all this is that The Last of Us: Part II is something original, yes, it has its flaws, no game is perfect, and although it goes against the taste of many who expected an approach similar to the original game, it it renews itself, evolves its mechanics and storyline, and seeks to make an impact in a game market different from the standard of 2013, something that only a caliber company like Naughty Dog and others would manage with such determination.

Billy | Until Dawn

When Until Dawn was originally announced in 2011 for the PlayStation 3, I thought, this is the horror 'Walking Game' that will most innovate on the market. It turned out that Telltale's The Walking Dead came before it, in 2012, and due to the delays, it came to 2015. Even despite all that, the Supermassive Games studio was unmoved, and even with a more "Teen" game, he manages to be scary and investigative, to his fear. The whole plot revolves around 7 friends, gathered at a party, where because of a bad joke, two of the characters were killed. Years have passed, and Josh, one of the protagonists, offers to hold a new party with his 4 old friends for his Birthday, in the same hut where his others died. In this, you will come across Demons and Scary Creatures that you can only escape if you are totally still, in addition to having a crazy Assassin around this party wanting to play with everyone there, in that snowy and tragic climate. The immersion passed by Until Dawn is very dignified, and its Butterfly Effect system is well used. This, is a system that puts Status and Statistics of the characters, such as Fear, Love, Friendship Level, Dislike, Ego, Anger, and others, and as you make your choices, with the 5 playable characters, you will shape and decide who lives .... and who dies, because yes, it is possible to complete / end the story of the game with All Alive, or All Dead, depends on how and what reactions you will have as you discover and choose during the entire adventure.

Billy | ZombiU

When officially announced by Nintendo, that Ubisoft was going to make a remake of the company's first game, the first of all, Zombi, I didn't believe it. And that it would be a WiiU exclusive? Oh, I didn't really believe it. Why not? Well, the Nintendo console audience has never been more attached to the Horror or Survival genre, and even more so in a title as serious and grotesque as Zombi, now called ZombiU (because of the name WiiU). With ZombiU, Ubisoft Montpellier, known for being the creator and developer of games in the Rayman franchise and Beyond Good and Evil 2, the French studio sought elements that would make the game difficult and strategic, although the structure is not entirely a game of Open world. Your first equipment is a Crowbar (Half-Life feelings ...) and with it you will have to survive countless hordes of Zombies in this London infected by a deadly virus called CB (Collumbus-B), yes, this is the same name as the Tom Clancy's: The Division virus, did you get the reference? Just like in State of Decay 1, the game has a system where if you die, you are reborn exactly from the game's starting point (but with progress saved), without any equipment, and you can go back to where your old dead body was and recover all. The game features a strong implement with the WiiU Touch Pad, informing the inventory bar and maps through it, using only the Touch. In ZombiU, any sound can mean death, mainly because the Zombies do a lot of damage, are a little smart, and gather in groups of 3 and 4, assembling small swarms. Also worthy of mention is the Soundtrack, where it is very atmospheric and eccentric, taking children's songs or fairy tales, and putting them in a terrifying tone, like the songs "London Bridge is Falling Down" or "Twinkle Twinkle , Little Star ", something that Ubisoft masterfully did, and made it all into a game with an even heavier, scary and dead atmosphere.
