There has been a lot of debate in recent weeks over whether the Xbox Series S would limit the Xbox Series X or even the generation due to its hardware specifications, but in a recent interview with IGN , director of Xbox project management, Jason Ronald, said this will not happen.
"The basic features are the same between the two consoles," he told the site, explaining that Microsoft has focused on the critically important aspects of the system to "unlock the next level of game design" and allow developers to increase and decrease the visual quality as they see fit.
Ronald explained that developers can use the power of the system in several ways, such as delivering 120 frames per second (with possible resolution compensations), dropping to 1080p for better anti-aliasing or enhanced graphics effects and ray tracing on or off to find the best possible experience.
Interestingly, while the Series S will target a 1440p resolution for its games, Ronald also confirmed that the console can reproduce even 4K resolution, and the visual decisions will be left entirely to the developers.
Jason Ronald explained to The Verge that the console’s memory doesn’t have to be as high or have such a high bandwidth:
It was also revealed through the previously mentioned IGN that the Xbox Series S was being planned since 2016 and that the idea of launching two new generation consoles was already in Microsoft's plans from the beginning. Through the portal we were also informed that Microsoft has no plans to discontinue support for the Series S during generation, considering Xbox Series consoles as a single family of devices.
